The European Culture Congress, one of the most important events concerning the cultural programme for Polish Presidency of the European Union Council, is scheduled to take place in Wrocław on September 8-11. Its motto is « Art for social change. »
The Congress will be organized by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the National Audiovisual Institute and the Wrocław City Hall. The Congress is to be distinguished from other similar initiatives by combining theory with practice. Discussions of intellectuals on the phenomena of modern culture will be accompanied by interdisciplinary projects with the participation of artists, theoreticians, culture animators and journalists from EU and Eastern Partnership countries including Umberto Eco, Vaclav Havel, Krystian Lupa and Andrzej Wajda. The starting point for the discussion on the role of art in the modern world will be a book by Prof. Zygmunt Bauman on the evolution of European culture and scenarios of its future development. The book will be created during the Congress. The Congress will create an opportunity for one of the most outstanding Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki to meet Radiohead guitarist Jonn Greenwood and electronic music artist Aphex Twin. Another highlight of the Congress is to be a performance by Krystian Lupa based on a text by Dorota Masłowska.
