Culture’s contribution to GDP has reached a new record and federal policies are consolidating this. Therefore, the Head of the Secretaría de Cultura stated that there has been a recovery after several years of economic and social crisis. “We are going uphill with great effort”, Coscia assured. The Culture Secretary, Jorge Coscia, highlighted that Argentina is going through a recovery process in terms of increasing cultural goods consumption and quality. He considered that it is fundamental to continue deepening the political model that allowed for such growth and to counteract the consequences of the neoliberal project that governed the country.

“Argentina is a great culture consuming country with a high level of education. Many have reflected about the quality of this education that does not focus just on teaching reading and writing, but that is a result of the cultural condition of the country where people read a lot, watch loads of films and consume good music. In this regards, we are living in a good moment”, pointed out Coscia when he was interviewed by A24.

He made clear, along this same line, that “Argentinean society comes from 50 years of economic and social downturn, as a result of unemployment and devastating policies that caused material damage, which is, no doubt, the cruellest, and cultural damage. A society that reaches very high levels of unemployment, like those reached by Argentina in the year 2001, cannot come through unscathed.

Thus, and while a raise in culture’s contribution to the total GDP is being experienced, the Head of Argentina’ Culture Secretariat considers that “Argentina is going uphill with great effort”. He also highlighted the importance of working horizontally in public administration to consolidate the federal cultural project.

“Education cannot be separated from culture because culture touches everything” affirmed Coscia. In relation to the recreational activities carried out during the summer season, he explained: “We do not see culture as isolated and that is why we have been working with several ministries that have to do with social welfare and health”.

He asked his fellow Argentineans to support the Government’s candidates with all resources available in this year’s elections for President, as a result of realizing that it is necessary to “continue redistributing wealth, achieve social justice, reduce poverty and create job opportunities”.
